Baby You’re a Firework #FashionFriday

You all know Mom is my favorite person on earth.  She’s there for me when everything’s going wrong and no one else gives a damn.  Luckily she is also there to have lots of fun with me.  The ups and downs of life are better experienced with your person.  And she’s mine.  (Sorry, Dad, you’re a close second 😉 )

Because we influence each other’s style and even share clothes, it was about time I share my fashion Friday with my fashionable mom.

She has been searching for a couple new dresses and having lots of trouble.  When I showed her this Draper James dress, she loved it.  It’s even better in person and so perfect for all the summer fun we’re having with the beaded fireworks.

I broke out my Draper James dress from a couple years ago.  Yellow so does not get enough love.  I can’t think of a better summer color.

And we are both wearing Loubis!  It took awhile of convincing, but Mom loves these shoes and also has them in black, both on sale last season.  I’m debuting my fireworks shoes that are so fun.  I’m all for anything with crystals on it.

We are ready for the fourth of July with this outfit!  Bring on the fireworks!

If you are a golf fan, I bet you have heard of Oakland Hills Country Club here in Southeastern Michigan.  It is one of the premier golf courses and country clubs in all of America.

And I have wanted to go there for as long as I can remember.  Finally on the last day of November, Mom and I attended a very nice charity event there.  We did some Christmas shopping, met some very nice people, and had a nice lunch (there was lemon meringue ice cream pie for dessert and it may have been the best thing I have ever eaten).

The club, decorated for Christmas, did not disappoint.  All the trees and wreaths were just stunning.  Plus, it was a sixty degree day with the sun shining so we walked out by the golf course which was beautiful.  We wished lunch was held out there it was such a nice day.

I picked up this dress at Saks on sale recently (and it’s still available online if you are interested).  I love that it has such a unique agate pattern and it garnered complements all day because it’s different.  I know women love wearing black but it can be so blah.  This is anything but.

Because I was headed to a fancy event, I wore my fanciest crystal Louboutins that don’t get out enough.  they sparkled just as much as the club.

This outfit is also perfect for New Year’s Eve.  It is shiny and sparkly and festive but a bit warmer than most of the sleeveless and strapless dresses that fill my closet.

What do you wear when you are attending a special event?

Fashion Friday: Little Black Dress

When I’m going out, I love to put on a dress. It’s so simple to not have to think about choosing matching tops and skirts. I have a few favorite dresses that are easy to wear and always look good. When I look good, I feel good.

This is one of the classic dresses in my closet. I bought it years ago (seriously, maybe five years) at Neiman Marcus when I had a coupon. I wear it all the time, whether I’m running errands or heading out for dinner.

The silhouette is really flattering with the built in belt and draping. It isn’t too tight or grabby and the fabric is breathable. It doesn’t wrinkle easily and never leaves me feeling uncomfortable.

Plus, it goes with anything. I paired it with my new squiggly heel Christian Louboutins this time. When I spotted these months ago, I knew I had to have them. They are different than anything else in my closet with that unique heel. I absolutely love the color too. It makes me happy just looking at them.

I also added my Dior bag with a little Tiffany key chain that matches the shoes pretty well, and my favorite fierce sunglasses. All of that along with a classic red lip, gave me a modern yet sophisticated look that made me feel like I could conquer the world … or at least the mall.

How to Wear a Day Dress

Very often when I am going somewhere I turn to the day dresses I have in my closet. For me, they are so easy to grab, put on, and go. I don’t have to worry about matching tops and skirts; I don’t even have to think.

While I sometimes struggle to find dresses like this that fit well, look great, and are super comfortable, when I do, I wear them all the time. I actually have this one in a bright shamrock green as well.

The ¾ sleeves make it perfect almost year round and the fit and flare silhouette is very flattering.

I also love the bold color. It is very striking and pops against my skin and hair. Plus it pairs well with neutrals and metallic, like the Prada shoes I wore with my polka dot skirt.

Those shoes are actually one of my favorite things in my closet. They were a collaboration with Neiman Marcus when they celebrated their 100th anniversary. I picked up this alligator pair on sale and couldn’t be happier I found them.

The next time you are searching through your closet, wondering what you should wear, try a casual, comfortable dress.

Fashion Friday: Custom Manolo Blahnik Pumps

I’m totally shoe obsessed.  Since I haven’t been doing Fashion Friday that long and it’s already my second shoe-centric post, you are probably starting to figure out just how much I love shoes.  When it comes to shoes, Manolo Blahniks are definitely some of my favorites.  The first designer anything I bought was a classic pair of Manolo Blahnik pumps.  I’ve since added many Blahniks to my collection.  I wear them all the time because I love them and they’re actually very comfortable.

I’m also obsessed with custom made things.  There’s something incredible about knowing a talented, skilled artisan made something just for me.  No one else tried it on; I am the only person that will ever wear it.

So when Neiman Marcus offered its customers the opportunity to order a custom pair of Manolo Blahniks that would arrive in six weeks instead of the typical six months, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.  For a change, Mom couldn’t pass it up either.  I love when Mom buys things!

There were an array of colors in leather, patent leather, and suede to choose from.  This was a tough choice, as they were all so pretty, but Mom chose a blue-black metallic patent leather (I already have a pair of Blahniks that color), and I went with bright purple suede, even though it’s showing up blue in the pictures.  The color is about the same as Barney . . . you know . . . the dinosaur.

Heel height options were also available.  They ranged from the demure 50 millimeters to the outrageous 115 millimeters.  Mom went with the classic 90 millimeters, about 3 ½ inches, while I was the crazy fashionista, ordering the 115 millimeter shoes, which are about 4 ½ inches.  They’re my tallest non-platform shoes.

When placing a special order, there’s always a risk it won’t work out.  It might not look like you expected or it doesn’t fit right.  So when Mom and I picked up our shoes earlier this week, our fingers were crossed for success.  Success was definitely achieved.  Mom’s classic pumps fit like a glove and shine from the pointy toe to the skinny heel.  And I love my shoes!  Seriously, LOVE them!  They don’t feel as tall as they look, fit perfectly, and seem pretty comfortable.  My favorite part is the awesome, unique heel.  I don’t have any shoes with that structure, so these were there perfect addition to my closet.

In case you are interested in your very own pair of custom Manolo Blahniks, Neiman Marcus is doing orders again starting this September!  Check with your local Neiman Marcus or online for details.  If they have more color choices, who knows, maybe I’ll find another pair in my closet too!

You know I love to write and bake, but you might not know just how much I love fashion and shopping.  So to introduce you more to the clothes, shoes, handbags, and makeup obsessed side of me, I want to welcome you to the first installment of Fashion Friday!  While I might not do this every week, many Fridays I’ll give you a peek into my closet to show you a piece I’ve had forever and still love or a new addition I can’t stop thinking about.  I hope you enjoy it!

Shoes are one of my favorite things.  I’ve loved them since I was four or five years old, parading around the house in Mom’s heels.  I haven’t stopped wearing heels since.  Fancy high heels are the best way to perk me up if I’m having a bad day.  I have a closet full of shoes and never wear the same pair two days in a row.  But there’s always room for more shoes.

These Charlotte Olympia shoes are my newest addition.  In fact, I haven’t even worn them yet, but I’m hoping to change that this weekend.  Called Girls on Film, I wasn’t sure I liked them at first, but after my favorite sales associate at Neiman Marcus brought them out for me to try on, I put them on and instantly fell in love.  They are unique, way more comfortable than they look, and I feel like they are kind of appropriate.

The straps are made to look like film reels.  Since I’m hoping everyday I’m inching closer to a film and television writing career (or having my novels published and turned into movies – I’m not picky!), I felt like these film inspired shoes were a sign.  They were also featured on the last page of the Neiman Marcus Book this month, and I think I saw them in Elle too!  But I bought them before all the press; in fact they had only been in the store a day when I made my purchase.  I’m excited to break out these shoes and have some fun.  Hopefully wearing them will bring me some movie magic in addition to old Hollywood glamour!
