Summer Weekend #FashionFriday

It’s rare that I take almost a whole weekend just for fun, but that’s what I did, even if I did sneak in a fair amount of working on the blog.  #workhardplayhard

The excitement kicked off with the Forgotten Harvest Comedy Night featuring Seth Meyers.  I must admit, I don’t watch Late Night a lot, but it sounded fun to get out and about and I figured he would be super topical and funny.

It was a lovely evening and the Foxtown area was bustling since there was also a Tigers game that mercifully hadn’t let out when we arrived.  We got in to the theater and took our seats in the front row.

Before long, the show began and after a live auction, which raised tons of money for such a great cause, Seth took the stage.  We were blown away by his skill at telling jokes.  He has a great stage presence, even if he rarely came to our side of the stage.  There is an incredible ease with which he tells the jokes, most of which are part of a larger story.

We laughed so hard as he covered everything from Donald Trump to being a husband and father.  I would happily see Seth again in person and am making sure to DVR Late Night more frequently.

After that we headed home just as it began to rain.  The next day, I wanted to get out an about despite another chance of rain, so we headed to Ferndale for brunch.  Ferndale is one of my favorite places to hang out – it has such a fun vibe.

I’ve been dying to try the Conserva, so that’s where we headed despite a barbeque festival taking place right in front of the restaurant.  Luckily it wasn’t crowded.  Service was prompt and the food was pretty outstanding.  The bartender made Mom and me drinks based on a couple questions.  They were both stellar.  I’m not sure about everything that was in mine, but it had allspice, cinnamon and bourbon and I could drink it forever.

The pannukakku was our favorite dish.  A custardy baked pancake that the owner and his brother chef brought to the restaurant from their family members, was topped with apricot jam, berries, and whipped cream.  It was warm and comforting and practically melted in our mouths.  I would compare it to a flourless chocolate cake without the chocolate.

The asparagus omelet with potatoes, peppers, and fried bread was great, but Mom was a little jealous of Dad’s 45 day aged strip steak and scrambled eggs with irresistible potato gratin and hollandaise sauce.  It was Father’s Day though 🙂  The steak was definitely overcooked, but still tender.  All in all the meal was fantastic and I would highly recommend it.

We took a walk through downtown Ferndale after a downpour cleared out and stopped at the Red Hook for cold brew for Dad and golden milk for me.  I’m so obsessed with golden milk!  We picked up some groceries at Papa Joe’s and headed home, happy and tired from a fun and exciting weekend.

It’s always nice to have a salon day, and it was particularly needed this week.  My hair had been looking a bit too ombre for my taste lately, so I told my amazing stylist Emilio at Alex Emilio Salon that I wanted the dark top to be more in line with the bright bottom of my hair.

He totally listened and created the best golden blonde that makes me feel so summery.  He said I belong in California with this new color and I was like duh, that’s where I live in my soul.

This Kate Spade dress with its fun print and lady like flare is so perfect for hot, humid summer days like we’ve had recently.

And I just realized my Manolo sandals kind of match my hair.

Those shoes are still in perfect condition even though they are from 2004 – the date is stamped on the bottom since they were a Neiman Marcus exclusive.

I remember the day I bought them.  Mom and I were planning to go to the mall to get them, but she wasn’t feeling well, so Dad had to go.  Thirteen years ago these shoes were super expensive and are still rather pricey even by today’s standards.

Blonde Ambition #FashionFriday

Dad’s game for whatever, but I totally cringed when they were the first pair he picked up and price checked when we walked in the door.  I actually picked up a pair of shoes for school and my very first pair of UGG slippers that day so the total was steep.  The salesman just put the receipt in the giant bag and sent us on our way without Dad ever seeing the total.

Since I still have these shoes all these years later and love them, I say they were a great investment.

Cherries are probably my favorite fruit.  Not only do I love them, but I also have so many great memories surrounding them.

Going to the produce store on the weekends to pick cherries out of a giant box and put in a plastic produce bag.  Thankfully they don’t sell them like that anymore.  Sitting at home on the summer, piling my plate with cherries while Mom and Dad were at work and Granny was sitting outside.  Swallowing a cherry pit.  Okay, so maybe that wasn’t a great memory, but it certainly stands out.

This season cherry prints are all the rage and that is a-okay with me because they are fun and funky and summery and perfection.

This is sure to be my favorite new summer outfit.  It’s from Draper James and it makes me so happy to wear it.  The bright colors, the fun vibes, the subtle ruffles around the sleeves and on the skirt as an accent.  Plus, Reese Witherspoon liked my Instagram wearing it #squadgoals!  Now if only I could get her to read a script or a novel of mine.

To keep the vibe totally summer and totally fun, I pulled out my Manolo flip flops that I haven’t worn in forever.

What’s your favorite fruit?  Would you wear it printed on your clothes?

The more we explore Detroit, the more cool things we find.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a city with a lot of problems and I’m still California dreaming, but particularly in the summer, I don’t mind at all spending time in Detroit and the surrounding areas.

A few weeks ago, in preparation of our trip to Standby, I noticed the alley in which it is located looked super cool.  And I was not disappointed.

I’m sure it takes on a whole other exciting and interesting vibe at night, but as the sun was setting, it was just lovely with the strings of lights and brightly colored graffiti.  It’s a fun place to hang out.

Because I knew it was going to be a long day with the opera and dinner, and the weather was nice, but a little chilly with a chance of rain, I took this into consideration with my outfit.

Artsy Alley #FashionFriday

The dress is fun and funky but sophisticated enough for the opera.  My new denim jacket (that I am deep love with) was perfect for keeping me warm without ruining my outfit.  And I could climb Mount Everest with YSL tribute sandals.

It was a fun day and a fun look in a cool place.  Here’s to hoping it’s merely a sign of things to come this summer.

Also, Mom got the same jacket as me in a different color.  I’m hoping we can share 😀

Wind Blown #FashionFriday

Wind Blown #FashionFriday

It seems like it’s always windy here.  In the winter, that’s pretty unbearable, but in the summer, it brings those beach vibes with a warm breeze and kind of makes me never want to go inside … until my hair gets stuck in my lipstick.

Wind Blown #FashionFriday

When it’s so super windy, it’s important not to wear a skirt that will blow up in the air.  That may or may not be a lesson I’ve learned the hard way.

It’s also the perfect time to wear something flowy or ruffled or both, to work with the wind instead of against it.

Wind Blown #FashionFriday

Wind Blown #FashionFriday

I purchased this ruffled skirt last year and fell in love with it.  I couldn’t wait to break it out again and walking around after grabbing a coffee at my favorite spot, Red Dot in Northville, Michigan, was the perfect time.  And I tried nitro cold brew for the first time and it was EVERYTHING!

Wind Blown #FashionFriday

The classic, casual blouse works so well against the ruffles.  And I can never get enough of the classic Saint Laurent Tribute sandals, plus a Prada bag and that run ghost charm.  It’s an easy look to wear all the time, but there’s a little something special about it with the skirt.

A couple weekends ago, we were scheduled to return to Books on the Lake in Grosse Pointe.  Mom and I attended last year in hopes of connecting with some authors and were reasonably successful, even if I don’t really have anything to show for it yet.

But it had been a yucky, rainy week and Mom hurt her back after sneezing.  Really, I was feeling down and out and didn’t really want to go.  But then I looked up the authors who would be appearing at the event and saw that Adriana Trigiani is a huge deal.

Club Chic #FashionFriday

I knew that since I had been feeling hopeless it was a very bad idea to stay home when maybe, just maybe my life would change.

Luckily Dad was kind enough to get up early on Saturday after working all week and drive me out to Grosse Pointe.  The day turned out a little nicer than anticipated and we arrived fashionably late.  #sorrynotsorry – it’s an early event, long drive, and long day.

Club Chic #FashionFriday

We ate lunch and the speakers began before long.  We were right in front of the podium and Adriana and Cynthia Tennent, a local romance novelist, gave awesome speeches that were heartfelt, touching, and funny.

After that it was time to head to get books signed.  This was my chance.  The lines were long and I hung at the back for time to talk.  It turns out I sat with Cynthia last year.  She was super nice, but doesn’t have the connections I need.  Amor Towles looked at me kind of like I’d grown a second head when I told him I was a writer and wished me luck.  Mom said, “well he’s a guy.”  LOL!  Guys just don’t understand.

Grosse Pointe Yacht Club

So it was up to Adriana.  Looking back, it was almost an out of body experience.  She gave me her phone number and email address and told me she’d help me.  We have talked since and she is incredibly kind and I really feel like she will help me and this will be the turning point of my life.

After I finished talking to her, I swear I could feel all the adrenaline rush out of my body.  I was beat.  I needed coffee.  So Dad and I headed to Red Hook in Detroit.  They actually had golden milk on the menu, which I always wanted to try and loved, so I had that, but I did taste Dad’s cold brew.  And really, there wasn’t enough caffeine in the world to bring my energy back up.

Adriana Trigiani and Me

Nothing has happened yet, but Adriana is a busy lady and this is a slow process.  The past few weeks have been full of ups and downs and lots of waiting, but like I said, I have a good feeling.  Fingers crossed!

As for this look, it was basically because it was May and cold and windy and cloudy out.  My trusty jacket came in handy.  I did break out my butterfly sandals though, because why not?  Butterflies are one of my good luck charms – they bring good things.

Upgraded Shirtdress #FashionFriday

smile two

I have a confession to make.  I didn’t love this dress when I first bought it.  Maybe it didn’t fit quite right, maybe it just felt a little too mature for me, but I didn’t love it.

It was expensive, so I felt guilty and wore it quite a bit.  Somewhere in there, I fell in love with it.

Upgraded Shirtdress #FashionFriday

The great thing about it is that it is a little warmer than the average dress.  It has short sleeves and it long and made of a heavy fabric.  On those chilly but not cold nights, it’s just perfect.

The fabric is gorgeous with a metallic purple vibe that is always changing colors slightly.

I realized what the dress needed was to be modernized a bit with a half up half down hair do.  That one simple change fixed everything.

This classic dress is a staple in my closet and I love that I can show it to you surrounded by the amazing nature I have been surrounded by this spring.

Light Versus Dark #FashionFriday

Light Versus Dark #FashionFriday

I told you last week about some nasty person who kind of ruined my day, but this week, I have a better story.  Someone, a couple people actually, who made my day.

A couple weekends ago, it was just beautiful out, though a bit windy as you can see in the photos, so we headed to downtown Plymouth, grabbed some coffee and walked around.

Light Versus Dark #FashionFriday

It was hopping, full of people out and about, thrilled to be enjoying the nice weather.  When we were walking around a park, there was a family – a dad and I think two kids.  One of the kids, a young boy, looked at me as I passed and said with wonder and excitement “cat glasses.”

It was an honest moment, something kids are so good at, not concerned about filtering everything they say.  We turned back and smiled and exchanged pleasantries with the dad, who may have been a little embarrassed.

But he shouldn’t have.

Light Versus Dark #FashionFriday

It was a fun, great moment, that instead of bringing me down for the rest of the day, totally lifted my spirits and made me happy.

Like the little boy, I too think cat glasses are pretty awesome 🙂

Light Versus Dark #FashionFriday

He also may have been intrigued by my blue lipstick.  I wouldn’t blame him.  The first time I wore it I felt a little self-conscious, but since then, it has become one of my favorites.

At the end of the day, it’s all just makeup and clothes; it comes off.  Why not have fun and wear cat glasses and blue lipstick?

Chance of Showers #FashionFriday

Chance of Showers #FashionFriday

Real talk today.

I love fashion and clothes and outfits and creating looks and I love sharing them here on my blog.  That side of me is more my passion than food even, I have realized.

In order to show you my looks, I have to take pictures.  Mom or Dad takes them, depending on whom I am out with.  We try to stay out of other people’s way and mind our own business.

Chance of Showers #FashionFriday

For some reason, other people don’t feel the same way.  I think it has something to do with where we live.  People don’t understand dressing up, taking pictures, posing like a model (California dreamin’ harder than ever).  They don’t understand that I can be a model without actually being a model.  Like so many other popular fashion bloggers out there, I am trying to build a brand and make a name for myself.  I am proud of this dedication, not embarrassed by it.

While a recent heckler (I don’t know what else to call him shouting “picture” and such) was an annoyance, it was a lady on the day these photos were taken that really upset me.

Chance of Showers #FashionFriday

After getting my hair done (shout out to Alex Emilio Salon in Royal Oak!) and dining at Triple Nickel in Birmingham, Mom and I stopped for a couple groceries on our way home.  It was a chilly, rainy, generally pretty nasty evening.  As we were about to walk in, I thought the umbrella would make for some cute pictures.

So we stopped under and awning and took a few.  A lady stopped in the middle of this weather to share some nastiness of her own.  Talking about how it didn’t make sense I had sunglasses on with an umbrella.  It’s raining.  She kept saying it over and over, for maybe a minute, taking time to stop on her trip to the grocery store to try to bring me down.

Chance of Showers #FashionFriday

It worked for a bit, but not too long because I am sharing these pictures.  I am proud of them, not in a stuck up, look at me kind of way, but in a this is me and my style, not what I saw in a magazine or on a celebrity.  This is who I am.  And I don’t think I’m so bad.

The sunglasses kind of make this look awesome.  And if you meet me, there’s a good chance I’ll be wearing them.  Sunnies are my jam in any kind of weather 🙂

Here’s to spreading compliments and positivity, not hate and negativity!

I bought this sweater early last winter and only had one chance to wear it.  It’s so beautiful, I was super bummed about that.

So, when Dad and I spent the day walking around Birmingham over the weekend, I put it on over a dress to make it spring appropriate and keep me warm from the slight chill in the air.

It was perfect for the weather and added a little something extra to the outfit.  I love that it is super cozy, yet also super fashionable.

Spring Crocuses

We spent a good ninety minutes walking around – yes, I walked in those shoes! – and it was a blast to see spring popping up in the crocuses and birds singing.

A coffee from Commonwealth kept us energized and the day really could not have been better.

What is your idea of the perfect spring day?
