Very early this year I was debating whether or not to go see Bruno Mars, but after watching his awesome Grammy performance (and the ticket prices skyrocket, of course), I knew I had to go.
So Mom and I headed to the Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday. It was supposed to be a very nice day and wasn’t bad by our house, but as we drove Mom and I admired a very cool looking cloud. I told her it was a storm cloud, and she doubted me.
About ten minutes later when we were driving under said storm cloud, she no longer doubted me. What can only be described as a monsoon came down on our car. We could barely see, and I knew Mom was freaking out, but we both tried to stay calm. Being in a semi-flooded construction zone didn’t help things, but we made it through, the skies parted and we saw multiple rainbows on our drive. Seriously, like five or six. Must be a sign something good is going to happen 🙂
I also want to give a shout out to the Palace. It will most likely be our last trip there since Little Caesars Arena is opening in about a month. The Palace is a lovely, safe venue that we are always happy to visit. It’s truly a shame to see it go, and we all wish they could do something great with it.
Now onto the music. Though we have been to multiple sold out events at the Palace, I have never ever seen it that crowded. I don’t know how or why, but the concourse was difficult to walk through and the arena was absolutely jammed with people.
Bruno took the stage just before 9:30 and the Palace was rocking. I could feel the energy and that was an incredible feeling. The seats weren’t as good as usual (as has been pointed out to me. Thanks Mom and Dad :/ ), but they were still on the floor and I had an excellent view of the stage. Being back a little ways gave a different perspective, allowing us to really enjoy the light show and see much of the crowd waving their hands in unison. It was really something. And three cheers for the StubHub seller who sprung for real tickets. E-tickets are the worst.
The first part of the set was heavy on music from 24K Magic, but I didn’t mind as I have fallen in love with most of those songs. “Perm” is probably my favorite. Then it was in to all his hits: an amped up version of “Marry You,” which I LOVED, “Runaway Baby,” “When I Was Your Man,” and “Just the Way You Are.”
The supreme performer, Bruno doesn’t rely on back up dancers or superfluous sets. It’s him and his band singing, dancing, and playing instruments, and it is something to see. He worked hard for that hour and forty minutes. The fireworks were a fun addition that really added to the visuals along with the laser lights.
At the end of the main part of the set, Bruno announced he was donating $1 million dollars to Flint. The crowd went wild. It was an incredible gesture because unfortunately people are forgetting about Flint when those people are still suffering. Most of us can’t imagine what it is like to have unsafe drinking water, and in this country there is no excuse for that happening. I am even more glad to be a fan and have attended the concert. THANK YOU, BRUNO <3
The encore may have been my favorite part of the show. A Jackson 5 cover of “I Want You Back” led into “Locked Out of Heaven” and “Uptown Funk” and the biggest shower of confetti ever. There was confetti in my hair until the next day and even after a shower. But it was the best reminder of one of the best nights.
I have seen a lot of concerts over the past few years and this was one of the best, which I do not say lightly. It flew by, and I never stopped jamming. I’m so lucky to be able to go to all these shows and even luckier to do it with Mom.
Hopefully some of Bruno’s magic rubbed off on us.
