I am always excited to check out a new (at least new-ish) restaurant, particularly when it is a steakhouse.
Late last year, Corner Chophouse opened in Winter Park, not too far from the iconic downtown Park Avenue district. I wanted to check it out the moment pictures began rolling out. The tables along the street outside and the intimate booths inside with warm wood at every turn for a welcoming feel.
Oh, and then there is the food. Steaks, sides, and a dessert cart from a time unfortunately gone by. My friend when shortly after they opened and raved about every bite of food they ate as well as the service. The only way a restaurant can be truly great and have staying power is when amazing food and excellent service meet. Add in great ambiance and it’s a spot that is impossible not to cheer for.
My friend and I recently went to Corner Chophouse for brunch after a visit to the Morse Museum. She had never been to the museum. It was my second visit, and I remembered why I loved it so much to begin with. It’s such a peaceful place with a gorgeous selection of tiffany glass. If you go, do not miss the chapel. It’s one of the prettiest spaces I have ever seen.
Back to brunch. We were one of the later reservations and the restaurant was emptying out, but we were still welcomed with open arms and never rushed as we enjoyed a nice booth inside the cool air conditioning on the hot day with a view of the world outside.
David our waiter answered all the questions and took great care of us.
We began with the lobster deviled eggs and milk bread doughnuts. I would have both again, but the eggs could use a hint of flavor. The doughnuts, though, no notes. They are perfection with the cinnamon sugar crust. I wish the dulce de leche dipping sauce had been warm, but honestly the doughnuts simply don’t need it.
Then we moved on to the spinach pastry with the restaurant’s signature creamed spinach baked into a flaky crust. My friend loved this, along with her eggs benedict.
I loved the French omelet. It was perfectly cooked and loaded with white cheddar that had just the right sharpness. The mushrooms on top were really herby but ultimately an earthy contrast to the bright salad and rich omelet.
Then there were the waffle fries. OMG, the waffle fries. They were absolute perfection with a crisp exterior, soft interior, and great flavor aka not too potato-y. They are the best fries I have had in a very long time.
I also took a cinnamon roll home to try, and it too was outstanding. It’s basically an elevated Cinnabon and the cinnamon roll I have been looking for my whole life and the only cinnamon roll I want to eat from now on. The tender dough, right amount of cinnamon filling and a glaze that isn’t too sweet and flecked with vanilla make for an irresistible combination.
Even though I have only been to Corner Chophouse for brunch, it definitely impressed me. I highly recommend it and would happily return for brunch or dinner.
