This is something I wouldn’t have done a few years ago. I would have heard about a giant sunflower field on the news, thought it sounded cool, maybe taken a ride past it and stayed safely in the car, but definitely not this.
I’m glad I have changed. Yes, there was dirt and tall grass and weeds and bees. So. Many. Bees. Two of whom hit me and then flew on their merry way. Some of it was a little scary. But I did it, and in doing so I saw something magical.
Ford Motor Company has planted acres of sunflowers for years now. Mom worked there before she retired and saw them each year. They have decreased the quantity from about one hundred acres to twenty, but still, the result is astounding.
Row after row of sunflowers, some bigger than others, some about done blooming, others just springing to life, bring sunshine to even the cloudiest day. They also bring butterflies, including beautiful monarchs that practically float through the air. The birds sing. The bees are hard at work.
It’s quite something that just a few steps away thousands of people are working for Ford. I hope they take some time to go see the flowers.
For this outing, I wore my go-to casual summer dress. It’s cool and comfortable, and actually washes super well in case I get it dirty. A blue bag for a pop of bright color and practical cork platform sandals completed the outfit. But this day wasn’t really about the outfit at all. It was about those flowers.
