I’m still pretending like fall isn’t here, and with temperatures around 80 and bright sunshine today, that’s not going to be too hard. I can be okay with October if it stays like this. But the peaches are starting to disappear from the stores and an abundance of apples and pears are present. Everyone talks about apples all the time and bakes with them even more, but I really love pears.
When they are perfectly ripe, they are soft, but not mushy, sweet, and super juicy. I love eating them as is for a snack or after-dinner treat or stirring them into my oatmeal in the morning. But I really love baking with them. They take on the best flavor and texture, with lots of vanilla notes, when baked into a cake, crisp, or muffins.
Sure, grocery store pears can be excellent this time of year, but there’s nothing like Frog Hollow Farm’s Warren Pears. Nothing. I’ve ordered them several times and was recently lucky enough to receive a box of this year’s record crop. Warren pears lack the grittiness that some pears have, are so juicy you’ll have juice running down your arms, and have a clean, sweet flavor. I couldn’t get enough of these pears and kind of wanted to eat them all just like they were, but I had to bake something with them. Stay tuned for that post on Friday (and you’ll definitely want to stay tuned – it is the best recipe I’ve made in awhile!).
Pears are also really healthy for us. They have tons of fiber, lots of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It’s such a bonus when something as yummy as pears is also a nutritional powerhouse. And these Warren pears are really quite a treat! Maybe if I ask really nicely Frog Hollow will send me some more 😉
Because I know you’re all going to run out and stock up on pears, Frog Hollow has a really cool contest going on. If you have an amazing pear recipe, post it on Facebook or Twitter with #FrogHollowPears or send an email to info@froghollow.com with #FrogHollowPears in the subject line. Be sure to have your recipe in by October 20. If you need more info, check out www.froghollow.com/prepare-a-pear. The winner will receive a six pack of Warren pears, a jar of apricot conserve, a jar of plum-blueberry conserve, a jar of Meyer lemon marmalade, a pear ginger cake, an assortment of cookies, a bag of granola, four bags of sun-dried fruit, and a bottle of olive oil. Can I enter? That is one amazing prize!
In case you’re not into baking, you can also enter to win a six pack of Warren pears from Frog Hollow Farm right here. There will be one lucky winner of this approximately $40 prize! In order to enter, answer the question: What is your favorite way to eat a pear?

That’s funny, I’m posting a pear recipe this week. I love eating pears with plain yogurt, cinnamon, and honey. Anyway, I’m not entering the giveaway. I feel guilty since I have my own pear tree. LOL
You have your own pear tree? That’s awesome!

I always think I’m not really a pear lover and then I eat one and it is delicious. I’m sure these are fabulous. I don’t have a single pear recipe but I think they would be good like I do peaches, cut in half with a little balsamic vinegar on them and bake in the oven.

Omg this is an amazing giveaway!!! I love eating pears plain, honestly. But if not plain, then in Smitten Kitchen’s pear bread! It’s AMAZING. Better than banana bread if you’re in the mood!
I will have to check out the pear bread – thanks for the tip!

If the pear is good–ripe, fresh & juicy–I like to eat it just as it is (fresh off the tree). If I’m baking, I like to make pear pie (with a crumble top) or pear bread. I also love to add pears to salads (fruit or greens). Thanks for the giveaway.
