It’s no secret that my all time favorite concert was Katy Perry’s Prismatic Tour. I loved loved loved that show and when I heard she was returning for the Witness Tour, I could not miss it. Thanks to the awesome ticket office I had seats right by the stage after a mix up with the map at Ticketmaster, and Mom and I headed to Little Caesars Arena for the early December show.
I had heard the show did not sell super well, I honestly can’t imagine why, Katy is an awesome performer, and the Arena was very quiet. The concourse was empty as Mom and I made a couple laps and bought some pins, including one made just for our show, which I thought was a nice touch.
We headed to our seats just before showtime and the arena did fill up quite a bit as the lights went down. I have had seats by the stage before at Prismatic and Taylor Swift’s 1989 Tour, and they are the best. The seats are right along the catwalk and the view is unparalleled. When the lights went down, I grabbed my phone so take pictures and videos and prepared to step to my left and the guard rail, but in the seconds I waited, the entire rows around us emptied and everyone was fighting their way to the stage.
I did tell LCA about this and my concerns have been addressed, but the pushing and shoving in that area was unacceptable and colored my views of the show, particularly the first quarter of it. Luckily, a very nice security guard allowed me to stand by her, actually giving me an even better view of the show, and Mom fended off the pushing and shoving until she joined me for the encore.
I love LCA and have not been shy about proclaiming my love, but there was a clear lapse in security on one side of the stage and I genuinely hope that does not happen in the future.
Back to the show. One of the best things about Katy is that she plays so many of her hits. While there were a few songs from Witness, all her best songs were included in the show, from Last Friday Night to I Kissed a Girl to Wide Awake to Firework, the last two showcasing her powerhouse voice beautifully. I get that artists have lots of new songs they want us to love, but Katy knows how to incorporate the lyrics and melodies that made us love her in the first place.
The other thing that is so loveable about Katy is her infectious playful energy. She sings, she dances, she makes jokes, she involves the fans. The bright colors and kitschy costumes add to the fun vibes of the show that make her concert a true escape. When fans are a part of the show, Katy truly shines. One young fan shared her wish for her brother’s diabetes to be cured, a powerful moment, and a dad joined Katy on stage to play basketball, a fun skit.
I read a very nasty review of this show, and I don’t get it. Yes, I love Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, but Katy Perry will always have my heart. There was not a lull, not a dull moment in the show where the fans sat down. Everyone was there and energized the entire time, enjoying the music, laughs, and overall good vibes. It takes incredible talent to do the singing, dancing and acrobatics Katy does, and to do it all with a sense of humor takes even more.
She captivated not only me, but that entire arena, and not many performers can say that. I can’t wait to see what new music Katy comes up with, what fun gimmicks, and what American Idol brings. I certainly hope she returns to tour before long because I will be there cheering her on and singing along.
